Patagonia - ‘A Net Plus’

What is the problem with discarded fishing nets? I’m glad you asked. It urns out they are 4 times more harmful than all other plastic pollution combined. They destroy marine habitats and can last for over 600 years at the bottom of the ocean. Before this project, I had no idea. I’m consistently inspired by companies like Patagonia and Bureo that are finding ways to solve our most pressing environmental problems.

For the past 5 years Patagonia and Bureo have been in development of NetPlus®, the traceable, 100% recycled plastic material used for the brim stiffeners in their hats. It’s made from damaged nets collected in fishing communities in Chile and Argentina—a project that benefits fishermen by helping supplement their income and benefits our planet by repurposing 71,000 pounds of waste per year.

Shot in Tomé, Chile and Ventura, CA.
